Why polar bears are eating & killing one another

Cases of Polar Bears killing and eating each other have risen due to melting ice and human activity in the arctic region resulting in erosion of their habitat as reported by a Russian scientist.

Cannibalism has risen tremendously now though earlier such cases were reported but very rare ones as observed by Ilya Mordvintsev, a scientist at Moscow’s Severtsov Institute of Problems of Ecology and Evolution.

This phenomenon is primarily due to lack of food for bears and males attacking females with cubs and to some extent due to rising human activity in the arctic.

This information has been confirmed by not only scientists but also by growing number of defense ministry officials and oil workers.

Russian researchers have led numerous researches in Arctic and Antarctica regions and have come up with many observations and predictions that include the following

  • Polar bears are moving away from their traditional habitation as ice melts due to global warming and will be confined to shore areas and high latitude archipelagos.
  • Current period has seen more killing of polar bears due to increasing activity of gas extraction on the high Yamal peninsula (located in northwest Siberia, Russia) bordering the Gulf of Ob (located in northern Russia) and launch of Arctic LNG plant.
  • Polar bears currently have been affected by abnormally warm weather on Spitsbergen Island in Norway’s Svalbard archipelago where no ice or very little ice was witnessed.

Russians in Arctic region have even sounded the alarm over polar bears entering human habitation areas to raid rubbish for their survival.
